EYP was commissioned to design a new distance learning facility in Building 9 for the Center for Advanced Educational Services. This facility supports two-way student and faculty interactive teleconferencing and satellite broadcasting over fiber between MIT and remote sites in America and overseas. Serving both credit and noncredit programs, the distance learning classrooms are a showpiece for the program and entire MIT community.

The project includes the renovation of Room 9-150, a large, existing tiered lecture hall seating approximately 170 students at tablet armchairs. This room was steeply stepped between a two volume space. The insertion of a new structural floor one foot above the first floor level has created a new intimate lecture space on the lower level area and two new high-tech classroom spaces above.
