The McCarran Airport Rent-A-Car Center will consist of three major project components: a 110,671-square-foot Customer Service Building; a 1,744,889-square-foot Parking Structure, and three Quick Turn Around (QTA) facilities. The site, which is located approximately 2.5 miles south of the airport, will be designed to accommodate 11 rental agencies and growth projections for the year 2012. The building will include a generous covered entry plaza to accommodate bus traffic which will shuttle customers to and from McCarran Airport. The three-level parking structure, adjacent to the Customer Service Building, will accommodate 4,500 ready and return vehicles for all of the agencies. The three separate QTA areas totaling 131,353 square feet will accommodate regional offices on the second level with wash bays and light maintenance at the ground level. Here vehicles are fueled and serviced then returned to the structure, ready for customer rental.
The combination of glass, metal, concrete and sandstone was used in an innovative manner throughout the project to achieve a highly sophisticated appearance and yet respond to the natural colors and textures present in the desert context. The massive roof structure with its deep overhangs protects the building openings from an often severe desert sun. Freestanding canopies were also designed as an integral part of the project to provide sun shade while customers are loading and unloading buses and traversing the front plaza.
